Rev. Nicholas J. Figliola
Lent 2012
Did you know that the season of Lent is meant to slow us down and
take a good look at ourselves and discover how close (or far) we
are away from our relationship with God and God’s people. Spouses
do this periodically either singly or with each other. This kind
of sharing is part of the process of Marriage Encounter which was
so very popular several years ago.
Nobody who is serious about friendship, love, and relationship
would ignore this bit of wisdom. Even car dealers give us a check
list when we buy a new car. Would anybody ever think of ignoring
that strange noise in one’s house heating system? Would anybody
ignore that strange, throbbing pain in one’s chest? Jesus, in the
Gospel, warns us to check out our relationship with God.
Lent gives us that opportunity. It is a time of renewing our
Baptism promises to put God and the People of God first. It is a
time of considering our relationship with the economically poor or
the isolated. We are our “brother’s or sister’s keepers. A
cursory look at the Gospel of Luke would tell us that.
Now is the acceptable time. Remember the old axiom: “Don’t put
off until tomorrow what you can do today”; and, “tomorrow never
comes.” Make the best of Lent. After all, who really has to
gain?
