| On Tuesday, April 25, 1967 at
10:58 a.m.,
a sudden flash fire completely destroyed a Sayville landmark...St.
Lawrence the Martyr Church. The entire 120 foot by 40 foot church
was engulfed in flames that could be seen for miles. The burning
church was only one problem...about 30 feet east of the church was the
parochial school with 700 children attending classes inside. All
of the children were evacuated safely from the school as soon as the
alarm sounded. About 10 feet west of the church was the three
story, stucco and wood rectory. The rectory was saved by the fire
department. The church, however, was a total loss. |
