The Seventh Station:
Jesus loves and blesses His rejected children
Arrival at the Golden Age Home Cluster (D)
Food For The Poor has supported cluster D since 1986.
Today the facility primarily houses mentally and physically challenged
children who have been abandoned by their families. This year they added
new area for physical therapy. We met several older “children” some as
old as 40 years old, but with the mental capacity of a child. My heart
went out to them as I watched people who were crippled from disease,
malnutrition, and those who lost limbs restricted to wheelchairs. You
couldn’t help but to notice how dedicated the staff was in meeting all
the residents needs which is a 24 hour 7 day a week job. In route to
this facility we were encouraged to embrace and to touch the people we
were to meet, and also to speak and smile with them. They were so happy
to see us. We made sure we visited every resident there and it was a
privilege for me to do so. One of the Residents named Scott just kept
repeating to me What have you got for me? What have you got for me? I
responded by saying, I have love for you Scott as I opened my arms and
hugged him. It wasn’t what he expected, but he held on to me so tight as
if he never wanted to let go. Sadly other then the staff our holding
them is the only form of affection and compassion they receive from the
outside world. We laughed with them and we played with them but in the
end by the time we boarded our travel van my fellow pilgrims were
touched so deeply there wasn’t a dry eye to be found.
