The Fourth Station:
Jesus says He will prepare a place for us
Arrival At Phoenix Park
Community
Phoenix Park is built in an area where former slums housed local sugar
cane workers. The sugar cane company generously deeded the land, which
enabled Food For The Poor to construct the current housing. Let it be
noted that this is the first community in their history to include a
separate room to serve as a kitchen.
At each of our stops everyone welcomed us with open arms but this
community was special. Each house that is built stands a plaque in front
of the house and has on it the name of the donor who made a family’s
dream come true in owning their own home.
Father shared a story with me I’d like to in turn share with you. A
young woman who was a waitress went on a pilgrimage a couple of years
ago and she decided she wanted to donate money each month even with her
modest salary to build a house for a family (cost of a house is approx.
$1600.00 to $2100) as she completed her pledge she began to tell the
patrons where she worked of this worthy cause and placed a miniature
replica of the house by the cash register at her job. She said “I have
built a house now I want to build a village.” Her vision has come true,
today that same woman is in the process of having her 18th house built
and Food For The Poor will dedicate the village in her name. What a
wonderful witness to our faith in this unassuming woman whose dedicated
effort has come to bear such abundant fruit. God Bless Her!!!
