The Immaculate
Conception Retreat Center
The building is located in the Kingston 8 section of
Jamaica it was originally to be a luxury hotel built by American
financiers in the 1950’s. When the Jamaican economy collapsed
approximately in 1954 they discontinued their efforts of completing the
project. As years went by an Order of Allegany Nuns from upstate New
York purchased the property at a dramatically reduced price. Adjacent to
the retreat center is a prominent all girls high school that has a
waiting list of up to 15 years. The grounds were extremely well kept and
had a very large built in pool. Every evening upon returning from our
days activities the front doors were locked and guards with dogs
patrolled the property. The rooms had modest sleeping quarters but still
expelled the beauty of yesteryear as the rooms were large and had a
large terrace as well, each overlooking the grounds. The Sisters made us
feel very welcomed and were very hospitable. They provided breakfast and
dinner for us daily. The meals were of Jamaican custom, chicken, fish,
rice and beans, fried plantains, and various exotic island fruits just
to name a few.
